College students build skills with industry placements

Full-time students from Macclesfield College recently swapped the classroom for real work experience.

As part of the College’s annual Industry Week in March, over 1000 students aged 16-18 completed a wide range of work related activities, many taking up work placements with some of the regions most recognised organisations.

Through the College’s exceptional links with employers students were guided in sourcing their own work placements, giving them a real sense of what it is like as a job seeker. The placements were based on the students current study programme helping them to prepare for a career within their chosen industry.

Chantelle Dewberry, Assistant Principal for Vocational Curriculum at Macclesfield College, commented; “It is our priority as a College to ensure that every student has the opportunity to gain as much real experience as possible. As well as improving students’ employability skills and making industry contacts, practical experience helps learners to narrow down their interests and focus their minds on what they really enjoy. We truly support our learners to build a purposeful future career.”

Other activities that took place during the Industry Week included expert enterprise and entrepreneurial sessions and visits from alumni students. Manchester Metropolitan University held innovation sessions and there were also notable guest speakers, including Nick Wester from Mercedes Benz to Motor Vehicle students, and Radiographer Chris Walsh visited Science students.

The week also saw the College celebrate National Apprenticeship Week with an entire event dedicated to the opportunities available to young people through Apprenticeships. The College offers a wide range of apprenticeships through its dedicated employer responsive unit Maxim Business Training, whose apprenticeship experts were on hand to answer any questions. The event also saw a variety of employers in attendance who could advise visitors about working in their industry. Tracy Cosgrave, Director of Employer and Commercial Services at the College commented, “It was great to see so many people excited about the opportunities apprenticeships can offer, not just for young people, but also for the employers who can meet their work force of tomorrow.
