Responsible to: Senior Science Technician.

Purpose of the post:

The science technician’s role is to assist the Senior Science Technician in the effective delivery of technical support to the Science department.

Technicians should not be expected to carry out duties that would be the responsibility of teachers in departments without technical support. E.g. Laptop maintenance or class supervision.

Duties:

  • Required to work cross curricular within the Science Department
  • Preparation of materials and setting up/clearing away of equipment as requested by teaching staff
  • Moving equipment between prep rooms and classrooms and moving equipment between classrooms
  • Assisting with the oversight of specialist teaching areas, stores and preparation rooms and arrangements of maintenance and repair services to equipment and working surfaces
  • Unblocking of sinks
  • Assisting with the maintenance of stock and breakage records, catalogues and user manuals
  • Assisting with the safe storage of chemicals, biological materials and electrical equipment in accordance with COSHH and CLEAPSS guidelines
  • Assisting with receiving and accounting for new stock and equipment
  • Assisting with the maintenance of safety standards in the Science Departments
  • Safe clearing away and disposal of chemical waste biological / microbiological waste
  • Washing up of used glassware and other reusable items
  • Assisting with the maintenance of all scientific equipment belonging to the Science Department which may include living organisms and care of animals and plants
  • Design and construction and apparatus
  • Assistance to teaching staff, if required, with demonstration lessons and class practicals
  • Immediate remedial measures for accidents, chemical spills fires, damage to clothing use of eye wash station etc
  • Following and advising on health and safely matters checking, e.g. Hazcard recipe cards
  • Shopping and purchase of materials from local shops
  • Obtaining materials from the abattoir
  • Assisting with the design and production of wall displays
  • Photocopying and laminating of resources
  • Assisting with the preparation of cover work, e.g. photocopying materials for cover teacher
  • Organising room changes within the department
  • First aid cover for the whole school including the restocking of first aid kits

  • Hours: Monday - Thursday 8.30am - 4.30pm and Friday 8.30am - 4.00pm
  • Salary: £227.55 - £284.90 weekly wage
