On this course you will gain knowledge and experience in a variety of media and techniques in order to make an informed choice from the wide range of Art and Design courses available for study at Higher Education level. This course will prepare you for a career in Art and Design and enable you to build a portfolio of work.
For this course you will need to be at least 18 years of age by the end of the first term of entry and have achieved one of the following:
• 5 GCSEs at grade 5 or above including English & maths and an art related subject, plus an A Level in an art-related subject at grade C or above, or an equivalent Level 3 diploma.
• If you are a mature student without the required formal qualifications you may be exempt from these requirements or be advised to study the Adult Gateway course prior to progression onto Foundation.
On receipt of your application to study this course you will be invited to attend an admissions interview with a member of the teaching team to discuss the course and its requirements further. You will be required to present a portfolio of your work at this interview.
This course will encourage you to develop creative and manipulative skills in response to media in both 2D and 3D studies. During this course you will cover the following areas:
• Drawing
• Painting
• Printmaking
• 3D Design
• Graphic Design
• History of Art and Design
• Photography
• Digital Imaging
• 2D Mixed Media
• Textiles
There are regular study visits for location-based work and to visit galleries and exhibitions including Liverpool, Manchester, and the Yorkshire Sculpture Park.
Formal assessment during the first two terms will allow you to evaluate your strengths and weaknesses and assist you to make the appropriate applications to Higher Education. There is a final major project assessed by exhibition.
The certificate is graded Pass, Merit or Distinction and is available as an overall Level 3 or Level 4 qualification. The course is validated by the National Board for Foundation Studies
