This is a vocational programme which will provide learners with the knowledge and understanding essential to the Land Based Sector, supporting progression to further learning or the workplace.

The course will focus on animal care to allow progression to our L2 Animal Care course.

Entry Requirements

For this course you do not need any formal entry qualifications

On receipt of your application to study this course you will be invited to attend an admissions interview with a member of the teaching team to discuss the course and its requirements further.

Course Content

During this course you will undertake a number of Units to give you experience of working with animals and preparing you for employment in the animal care sector.

Units could include:
• Caring for and feeding animals
• Moving and accommodation of animals
• Finding out about the land-based sector
• Developing a Personal Progression Plan

Alongside your main programme of study, you will also study either GCSE or Functional Skill in English and Maths if you have not achieved a GCSE grade 4 or above in both these subjects.

Assessment

All units are internally assessed. Each unit is graded Pass, Merit or Distinction and then an overall grade of Pass, Merit or Distinction is awarded on completion.

For assessment you will complete a range of both practical and research-based activities, whilst having close contact with a selection of animals. You may attend a number of visits which include local animal sanctuary, zoo and equestrian establishments. You will have to produce a portfolio of evidence which will be graded.

GCSE and Functional Skills qualifications are assessed through external examination and portfolio work.

On successful achievement of this course you may wish to:

• Apply to study level 2 animal care at Macclesfield College
• Pursue a career within animal care related areas.

• Dog Walker or Kennel Assistant
• Animal Park Keeper or Farm Worker
