This is a vocational programme which will provide learners with the knowledge and understanding essential to the Animal Industry Sector, supporting progression to further Higher Education learning or the workplace.

Entry Requirements

For this course you will need to have achieved one of the following (subject to awarding body conditions):

5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English, Maths and Science, or completion of level 2 qualification.

On receipt of your application to study this course you will be invited to attend an admissions interview with a member of the teaching team to discuss the course and its requirements further.

Course Content

During this course you will study eight mandatory units and ten optional units over two years of the BTEC National Extended Diploma in Animal Management. As well as classroom delivery, you will also undertake placement in a real work environment with a requirement of 150 hours.

Mandatory units include:

· Animal Biology
· Animal Welfare and Ethics
· Practical Animal Husbandry
· Animal Behaviour
· Animal Health and Disease
· Work Experience in the Animal Sector

Optional units may include:

· Wildlife Ecology and Conservation Management
· Exotic Animal Husbandry
· Animal Grooming

Alongside your main programme of study, you will also study either GCSE or Functional Skill in English and Maths if you have not achieved a GCSE grade 4 or above. If you have achieved a grade 4 or above in GCSE English and Maths, you will engage in extending these skills through a Directed Study Programme.

Assessment

Unit, 1, 2 and 3 are assessed through a task set by BTEC and externally marked. All other units are assessed internally. Each unit is graded Pass, Merit or Distinction and then an overall grade of Pass, Merit or Distinction is awarded on completion.

GCSE and Functional Skills qualifications are assessed through external examination and portfolio work.

On successful completion of this course you may wish to:

Apply to study a Higher Education Degree at a University or a Veterinary Nursing Course at a relevant College, or alternatively, you could progress in the workplace in a variety of job roles, such as:

• Animal Care Assistant
• Pet Store Assistant
• Dog Walker or Kennel Assistant
• Animal Park Keeper or Farm Worker
• Trainee Zoo Keeper
• Trainee Dog Groomer
