Overview of the Course
Access to Higher Education Diplomas are full Level 3 qualifications designed to prepare learners without traditional qualifications for entry into Higher Education (whether this be a degree at University or an HNC, HND or Foundation Degree at the College).
Access to Higher Education Diplomas are designed to ease learners back into education and will develop your knowledge, build your confidence, improve your learning techniques and develop your communication and IT skills. They will also give you the essential tools to be able to study effectively. The courses are designed to enable learners who may be lacking in confidence, without formal educational backgrounds or who have other commitments to succeed in Higher Education (HE).
Each year over 40,000 learners in the UK register on Access to HE Diplomas and most go on to succeed in HE and embark on life changing new careers.
Access to Higher Education Diploma (Health Professionals)
The Access to Higher Education Diploma (Health Professionals) gives you the opportunity to apply for a degree across a range of health related areas including nursing, midwifery, paramedic etc. – preparing you well for academic work and university life. It’s an extremely popular course and an excellent way to maximise your job prospects. It could lead to you having a worthwhile career which has a positive impact on other people’s lives.
Studying an Access to HE Diploma leads to a national qualification, which is accepted as a standard entry qualification by HE providers in England and Wales. The vast majority of universities will accept Access to Higher Education Diplomas (Health Professionals) as an entry requirement to a health-related degree, but you‘re advised to check this with each of the establishments you’re interested in attending.
The course starts in September for the duration of one academic year and is organised to allow students to fit their study around their home, family and work commitments (9.30am – 3.00pm). You will be expected to attend all teaching sessions for approximately 10 – 12 hours in college over 3 days a week. Please note that you will need to supplement this by studying in your own time. Sessions will be delivered in well-equipped traditional classroom/laboratory settings; in addition you will access on-line material.
To gain entry to the programme you must have a GCSE at Grade C (4) or above in either English or Maths and a D (5) in the other.
The Access to Higher Education Diploma (Health Professionals) covers a range of topics:
Health Studies (such as Contemporary Health Issues)
Biological Science (such as Anatomy, Body Systems)
Psychology and Sociology
Related Studies (a Research Topic)
Skills for Learning and a Common Core Subject (Number at Level 2)
You will be assessed both formally and informally with the emphasis on continuous assessment and coursework to include essays, presentations, case studies, scientific reports, practicals, research projects and portfolios.
