Overview
This course is designed to give an introductory overview to some of the key principles, knowledge, understanding and skills relevant to the animal care sector. Learners will study animal health and will develop their safe animal handling skills, which is vital in order to effectively care for animals.
Entry Requirements
For this course you will need to have achieved the following:
4 GCSEs at grade D or above including English or Maths at grade 3 or higher, or prior achievement at level 1. Subject to awarding body conditions
Content
Includes a compulsory unit of animal health, and a selection of units including animal handling, animal accommodation, animal health and principles of animal behaviour. This is a vocational qualification so time will be spent in the animal room and outdoor pen areas handling and observing the animals.
Assessment
Unit 1-Animal health is externally assessed via a written paper-based exam. The remaining units are internally assessed. Internal assessment allows learners to develop a wider range of skills and provide evidence towards meeting the unit assessment criteria. Evidence for assessment can be generated through a range of activities, including role play, practical performance and verbal presentations.

Progression
On successful completion of this course to an acceptable level, students can progress to level 3 extended diploma in animal management.
Additional information
There will be additional costs for trips related to this course. This includes trips to Chester zoo, Guest speakers with a range of animals including reptiles, snakes and exotic insects. Visits to animal charity organisations, bird sanctuaries, and marine exhibits.
