16-18 Year Olds

Overview

This course is split into 2 certificates.

In semester 1 you will complete Level 1 Introductory Certificate in Health and Social Care and in
semester 2 you will complete Level 1 Introductory Certificate in Caring for Children under Five.

Together these certificates will give you the opportunity to do lots of practical activities to help you to learn
to care for adults, or children, it will also help you to develop your work and life skills. The benefits of this
course gives you an insight into the potential direction you may want to take in your further education and
employment and our specialist tutors are there to support you every step of the way.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements but all learners recruited should be able to access a Level 1 programme
with the confidence that they will complete the certificate and:

• have the personal motivation to succeed at this level and to progress to further study and, ultimately, to employment
• are willing to improve their maths and English skills

Content

The course will enable you to gain a basic understanding of the key areas in caring for adults, and children. The course
is in unit form and some topics may include:

• Being Organised
• Developing a Personal Progression Plan
• Finding Out About Health and Social Care Services
• Communication Skills for Health and Social Care
• Supporting Others to Use Adapted Equipment Safely

Level 1 Introductory Certificate in Caring for Children under Five

• Being Organised
• Developing a Personal Progression Plan
• Providing an Activity to Encourage Children to Eat Healthily
• Providing an Activity to Support Children’s Numeracy
• Supporting Children’s Learning Through Everyday Experiences

Assessment

You will be assessed in a variety of methods including coursework, leaflets, booklets and displays, assignments,
practical tasks and presentations. Internal assessment allows learners to develop a wider range of skills and
provide evidence towards meeting the unit assessment criteria. Units are assessed using a grading scale of
Distinction, Merit, Pass.

Pearson Edexcel BTEC

Progression

This qualification will prepare you for further learning at a higher level in Health and Social Care or Childcare.
The development of transferable skills means that you can also choose a study programme from alternative
sectors. For example, these qualifications in health and social care could lead to Pearson BTEC Level 2 qualifications
in this sector, or to the Pearson BTEC Level 2 Apprenticeships in the health and social care sector or to Level 2 qualifications in other sectors.

Additional information

You may need to purchase a DBS check at a current cost of £54.

Trips, visits and guest speakers from the sector, developing creative skills, taking part in the College wide
enrichment programme, money raising for charities and placement opportunities will also form part of your course.
