16-18 Year Olds

Overview

The animal management sector is a rapidly developing industry. This course will give you the opportunity to develop your knowledge in all aspects of animal management including animal health and welfare, animal science and gain hands on practical and husbandry skills.

Entry Requirements

For this course you will need to have achieved 4 GCSEs Grade A*-C, grade 4 or above, ideally to include Maths, English and Science

On receipt of your application to study this course you will be invited to attend an admissions interview with a member of the teaching team to discuss the course and its requirements further.

Content

During this course you will study a total of 18 units in areas such as:

• Promoting animal health
• Interpreting animal behaviour and communication
• The principles of inheritance and gene manipulation
• Safe handling and safe working with animals
• The principles of animal nutrition
• Fundamentals of science

You will complete a variety of both practical and research based activities whilst having close contact with a range of animals. You will attend a number of visits which include a local animal sanctuary, zoo and equestrian establishments..

Alongside your main programme of study you will also study either GCSE or Functional Skills in English and Maths if you have not achieved a GCSE grade C / 4 or above. If you have achieved a grade C / 4 or above in GCSE English and Maths, you will engage in extending these skills through a Directed Study Programme.

Assessment

All assessment is through a combination of coursework and practical activities. This can take the
form of presentations, lab reports, essays, practical experiments and group work activities.

GCSE and Functional Skills qualifications are assessed through external examination and portfolio work.

Progression

On successful achievement of this course you may wish to:

• Apply to study a Higher National qualification in Applied Biology or Applied Chemistry at Macclesfield College or
other Higher Education courses with another provider
• Apply to study courses such as Animal Science, Equine Studies,
• Pursue a career within animal management related areas
