Overview

This course is a technical qualification aimed at those who wish to follow a professional route into the construction industry. It has been designed to enable you to develop a substantial common core of knowledge, including an understanding of how activities of the sector impact on the natural environment and how the natural environment can be protected during a construction project. You will have maximum opportunity to study in more depth a full range of optional units of your choice such as Surveying in Construction and Civil Engineering. You will develop a wide-ranging knowledge, understanding and skills required for direct progression into a broad range of roles within the industry you are hoping to be a part of.

Entry Requirements

For this course you will need to have achieved. 4 GCSEs at grade A*-C including English and Maths at grade 4-9 or prior achievement at level 2. Subject to awarding body conditions

On receipt of your application to study this course you will be invited to attend an admissions interview with a member of the teaching team to discuss the course and its requirements further.

Content

During this course you will study how to design a variety of building services such as heating, ventilation, air conditioning, electrical systems and plumbing. You will work either individually on assignments or as a group on a project which brings all the aspects of building services together. There will be field trips to visit current buildings in order to widen your knowledge of building services systems. The main benefit of this programme is the wide range of careers available to you within the construction industry.

Alongside your main programme of study you will also study either GCSE or Functional Skills in English and Maths if you have not achieved a GCSE grade C or 4 or above. If you have achieved a grade C or 4 or above in GCSE English and Maths, you will engage in extending these skills through a Directed Study Programme.

Assessment

You will be assessed by projects, assignments, interviews, presentations and course work marked by college tutors and externally verified by BTEC Assessors.

GCSE and Functional Skills qualifications are assessed through external examination and portfolio work.

Progression

On successful achievement of this course you may wish to:

• Apply to study a HNC/D in Building Services or Construction and Property

• Pursue a career as an Architect, Project Manager, Design Engineer for heating ventilation & air conditioning, Quantity Surveyor or Construction Site Manager to name but a few
