The BTEC Level 3 in Engineering is a nationally recognised work-related qualification, which encompasses mechanical and electrical elements designed to give you a good start on your journey to a career in engineering. The course is based around examined units and internally assessed assignment lead units that are aligned to realistic vocational situations, activities and demands. The course will introduce you to and prepare you for the engineering work place.
This course provides a good basis to progress onto a higher qualification, such as a university, a Higher National Certificate (HNC) and Higher National Diploma (HND). Alternatively, it can help you progess to an apprenticeship in an engineering discipline.
For this course you will need to have achieved one of the following:
• GCSE at Grade 5 or above in Maths and a minimum of 4 other GCSEs at Grades 4 or above including English Language and Science.
• Level 2 qualification in an Engineering-related subject with an overall Level 2 Merit, GCSE Maths at Grade 5 or above and GCSE English at Grade 4 or above.
On receipt of your application to study this course you will be invited to attend an admissions interview with a member of the engineering teaching team to discuss the course and its requirements in detail.
During this course you will study a variety of mandatory and optional Engineering units to develop knowledge, skills and behaviours of engineering profession.
• Unit 1: Engineering Principles
• Unit 2: Delivery of Engineering Processes Safely as a Team
• Unit 3: Engineering Product Design and Manufacture
• Unit 4: Applied Commercial and Quality Principles in Engineering
• Unit 5: A Specialist Engineering Project
• Unit 6: Microcontroller Systems for Engineers
• Unit 7: Calculus to Solve Engineering Problems.
Optional units could include:
• Unit 10: Computer Aided Design in Engineering
• Unit 19: Electronic Devices and Circuits
• Unit 21: Electronic Measurement and Testing of Circuits
• Unit 27: Static Mechanical Principles in Practice
• Unit 29: Principles and Applications of Fluid Mechanics
• Unit 39: Modern Manufacturing Systems
• Unit 41: Manufacturing Secondary Machining Processes
• Unit 45: Additive Manufacturing Processes
During the course you will carry out a number of assignments, internal and external tasks/exams set by the awarding body.
• Unit 1 – Engineering Principles is externally set and marked exam.
• Unit 3 – Engineering Product Design and Manufacture is a task based externally set and marked exam.
• Unit 6 – Microcontroller Systems for Engineers is a task based externally set and marked exam.
All other units are internally assessed.
You will also have the opportunity to produce a work-related project that will allow you to creatively utilise and apply the knowledge, skills and behaviours you have developed throughout this course.
On successful achievement of this course you may wish to:
• Apply to University for higher study
• Apply to study a Level 4 qualification such as HNC at the College where this will lead you to study HND at the college
• Apply direct to Industry for an apprenticeship
• Apply direct to the armed forces
• Apply for a degree apprenticeship
• Pursue a range of employment opportunities within a variety of engineering settings.
