The City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Hair and Make-up is aimed at those who wish to pursue a career as an employed and/or self-employed hair and make-up artist. This course will also develop your communication and wider personal skills which are essential in this type of work. In addition, you will also undertake work experience.
For this course you will need to have achieved one of the following:
4 GCSEs at grade 3 or above or prior achievement at level 1
This qualification is based on the National Occupational Standards for beauty therapy and includes all the required elements to work effectively as a hair and make–up artist you must achieve all mandatory units which include:
• Working in beauty related industries
• Follow health and safety practice in the salon
• Client care and communication in beauty related industries
• Apply make-up
• Provide eyelash and eyebrow treatments
• Create an image based on a theme within the hair and beauty sector
• The art of photographic make-up
• Body art design
• Apply skin tanning techniques
• The art of colouring hair
• The art of dressing hair
• Make and style a hair addition
Lectures given by industry experts. Employers input is embedded into projects and exercises, contributing to assessments and examinations.
Alongside your main programme of study, you will also study either GCSE or Functional Skill in English and Maths if you have not achieved a GCSE grade 4 or above. If you have achieved a grade 4 or above in GCSE English and Maths you will engage in extending these skills through a directed study programme.
All units contain internal and external assessment elements and include an externally set and externally marked theory exam, employer engagement activities and a practical graded set of tasks. Each unit is graded pass, merit, distinction and an overall grade is awarded with all grades calculated together to gain a level mark pass, merit or distinction and awarded on completion.
GCSE and Functional Skills qualifications are assessed through external examination and portfolio work.
On successful completion of this course, you will be eligible to become a member of the British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (BABTAC). As a hair and make-up artist, you could progress directly into employment in a variety of contexts which include:
• Photographic studios
• Department stores
• Make-up stores
Whilst the primary purpose of this qualification is to prepare you for employment, you may choose to develop your knowledge and skills further by completing a specialist qualification at Level 3 in one or more of the following areas:
• Theatrical and media make-up
Successful completion of the course can lead to a career within hair and media industries or as a freelance make-up artist.
