Overview
The Level 2 Diploma in Women’s Hairdressing is a vocational qualification which is ideal for those seeking a career as a hairdresser / stylist. The majority of your learning will take place in the College’s own well-equipped salon which is a real working environment. You will carry out assessments on real paying clients in line with commercial service timings. In addition, you will also undertake work experience in an external salon.
This qualification is recognised by the UK’s lead hairdressing professional association and will prepare you for a career as a hairdresser/ stylist.
Entry Requirements
For this course you will need to have achieved following:
· 4 GCSE’s grade 3 or above to include English & maths
· Hairdressing or skills test / interview outcome
Content
This qualification is based on the National Occupational Standards including a variety of hairdressing techniques to enable you to work effectively as a hairdresser/stylist. You must achieve all mandatory and optional units which include:
• Working in the hair industry
• Follow health and safety practice in the salon
• Client consultation for hair services
• Shampoo and condition the hair and scalp
• Promote products
• Cut women’s hair
• Colour and lighten hair
• Perm and Neutralise hair
• The art of dressing hair
• Create an image based on a theme within the hair and beauty sector
• Plaiting and twisting hair
Alongside your main programme of study, you will also study either GCSE or Functional Skill in English and Maths if you have not achieved a GCSE grade 4 or above. If you have achieved a grade 4 or above in GCSE English and Maths you will engage in extending these skills through a directed study programme.
Assessment
All units contain internal and external assessment elements and include an externally set and externally marked online exams. Formative and summative practical assessments will be carried out for each unit. You will be continually assessed through written means including knowledge questions, assignments, tasks, oral questions and online exams. You will build a portfolio of evidence as part of your qualification. Each unit is graded pass, merit, Distinction and an overall grade is awarded with all grades calculated together to gain a level mark pass, merit or distinction and awarded on completion.

On successful completion of this qualification you could progress directly into employment in a variety of contexts, which include:
• commercial salons
• independent/self-employed/freelance/home-based settings
Whilst the primary purpose of this qualification is to prepare you for employment, you may choose to develop knowledge and skills further in the following area:
City and Guilds Level 3 Diploma in hair services
or
Apprenticeship
