The City and Guilds Advanced Technical Diploma in Theatrical, Special Effects and Media Make-Up Artistry qualification who wish to pursue a career as a make-up artist, providing hair and make-up services in the media, theatre, performing arts, fashion and photographic industries. You will develop your communication and personal skills which are essential in this type of work, and will gain practical experience through work experience.
For this course you will need to have achieved one of the following (subject to awarding body conditions):
· Level 2 hair & make-up artistry qualification
· 5 GCSEs at grade 3 or above including English at grade 4 or higher, or prior achievement at level 2.
On receipt of your application to study this course you will be invited to attend an admissions interview with a member of the teaching team to discuss the course and its requirements further.
During this course you will study 7 mandatory units and 3 optional units. As well as classroom delivery, you will also undertake placement in a real work environment.
Mandatory units include:
• Cutting and styling techniques for performers
• Avant-Garde hair and make-up
• Creative make-up design for productions and industry demands
• Apply prosthetic pieces and bald caps
• Special effects make-up
• Create, dress and fit facial postiche
• Body art for competition
Optional units may include:
• Camouflage make-up
• Create, cast small prosthetic pieces and bald caps
• Wig dressing, fitting and maintenance
Alongside your main programme of study, you will also study either GCSE or Functional Skill in English and Maths if you have not achieved a GCSE grade 4 or above. If you have achieved a grade 4 or above in GCSE English and Maths, you will engage in extending these skills through a directed study programme.
All units contain internal and external assessment elements and include an externally set and externally marked theory exam, employer engagement activities and a practical graded synoptic assessment using an externally set practical assignment marked through external moderation. Each unit is graded pass, merit, Distinction and an overall grade is awarded with all grades calculated together to gain a level mark pass, merit or distinction and awarded on completion.
GCSE and Functional Skills qualifications are assessed through external examination and portfolio work.
On successful completion of this course you may wish to progress into make-up artistry work in commercial and media industries including TV and Theatre, or take continue your studies on a university-level course.
