Animal Care provides an introduction to the handling and day to day care of a range of animals.
2 GCSEs at grades E-G or 2-1
On receipt of your application to study this course you will be invited to attend an admissions interview with a member of the teaching team to discuss the course and its requirements further.
During this course you will study a total of 7 units in areas such as:
• Assist with maintaining the health and wellbeing of animals
• Assist with the preparation and maintenance of animal accommodation
• Assist with the handling and the restraint of animals
• Assist with feeding and watering animals
You will complete a range of both practical and research based activities, whilst having close contact with a selection of animals. You will attend a number of visits which include local animal sanctuary, zoo and equestrian establishments. You will also have to produce a portfolio of evidence which will be graded.
Alongside your main programme of study you will also study either GCSE or Functional Skills in English and Maths if you have not achieved a GCSE grade 4 or above. If you have achieved a grade 4 or above in GCSE English and Maths, you will engage in extending these skills through a Directed Study Programme.
All assessment is through a combination of practicals and coursework. This can take the
form of observations, short reports, and group work activities.
GCSE and Functional Skills qualifications are assessed through external examination and portfolio work.
On successful achievement of this course you may wish to:
• Apply to study level 2 animal care at Macclesfield College
• Pursue a career within animal care related areas
