The Level 2 Award in Support Work in Schools has been designed to provide learners with an understanding of the knowledge and skills needed when working with children and young people in school or college environments. It covers the many varied roles that full- and part-time support staff may fulfil including administrative roles, as well as those roles that work directly with children and young people in the school environment for example teaching assistants.
The structure is simple with mandatory units to support all-round knowledge and skills in important areas for future employment in different learning environments.
As it is a knowledge based qualification, providing initial training and induction for those new in post, learners do not need to be working or on a practical placement for the duration of the course in a learning environment (school or college) however, this will be required for progression to a Level 3 qualification.
Learners need to be over 16 years of age.
This qualification covers the following units:
Children’s and Young People’s Development
Safeguarding the Welfare of Children and Young People
Communication and Relationships
Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
Schools as Organisations
All units will be internally assessed using a range of methods which could include: Learner’s own plans and written records, written assignments or a recorded practical task
The learner will hold an introductory qualification at Level 2 and this may lead to employment in Primary, Secondary and Specialist areas in Supporting Teaching and Learning. Learners can also progress onto the Level 3 Diploma in Specialist Support in Teaching and Learning.
Learners will need access to online support materials at home.
Prior to starting the course, the learner needs to have successful completion of (BKSB) Maths and English initial assessments (above Entry 3).
