You are required to purchase (through the college) RYA course materials costing approximately £37 (subject to confirmation at the time of enrolment). These include practice charts, navigation tables and a book and will normally be available at the first class.
If you’ve recently done the Day Skipper theory course you should already have the Almanac which will save you £5.
The topics you will study include:
• Dead reckoning
• Magnetic compasses
• Tidal heights and streams
• Position fixing
• Navigation in restricted visibility
• Passage planning
• Rules of the road
• Safety at sea
• Electronic Aids to Navigation
You will be assessed by on-going exercises (done as homework – approx. 14 hours) and by three examinations.
You will be entitled (given that you have the required sea time etc) to take the Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster practical examinations. You may also wish to progress to the Ocean Navigation course.
You should bring along a notebook or paper plus a soft (2B) pencil, eraser and your chosen navigational instruments for chartwork. You are required to purchase (through the college) RYA course materials costing approximately £25.
