Overview
The VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Hair and Make-up Artistry is a technical certificate qualification aimed at those who wish to pursue a career as an employed and/or self-employed hair and make-up artist. This course will also develop your communication and wider personal skills which are essential in this type of work. In addition, you will also undertake work experience.
Entry Requirements
For this course you will need to have achieved one of the following:
· 4 GCSEs at grade 3 or above including English at grade 4
· or prior achievement at level 1.
On receipt of your application to study this course you will be invited to attend an admissions interview with a member of the teaching team to discuss the course and its requirements further.
Content
This qualification is based on the national occupational standards for beauty therapy and includes all the required elements to work effectively as a beauty therapist. You must achieve all mandatory units which include:
• Health safety and hygiene
• Make-up applications
• Hair preparation services
• Continuity planning for make-up services
• Dress and finish hair services
• Continuity hair services
• Anatomy and physiology for make-up artists
• Total look for competition work
• Face and body art painting
• Fashion and editorial make-up
Alongside your main programme of study, you will also study either GCSE or Functional Skill in English and Maths if you have not achieved a GCSE grade 4 or above. If you have achieved a grade 4 or above in GCSE English and Maths you will engage in extending these skills through a directed study programme.
Assessment
All units contain internal and external assessment elements and include an externally set and externally marked theory exam, employer engagement activities and a practical graded synoptic assessment using an externally set practical assignment marked through external moderation. Each unit is graded pass, merit, Distinction and an overall grade is awarded with all grades calculated together to gain a level mark pass, merit or distinction and awarded on completion.
GCSE and Functional Skills qualifications are assessed through external examination and portfolio work.

Progression
On successful completion of this course, you will be eligible to become a member of the British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (BABTAC). As a hair and make-up artist, you could progress directly into employment in a variety of contexts which include:
• Theatre, film, print media, photographic studios
• Beauty and/or hair salons
• Independent/self-employed/mobile/home based settings
• National Health Service
• Product manufacturing and training
Whilst the primary purpose of this qualification is to prepare you for employment, you may choose to develop your knowledge and skills further by completing a specialist qualification at Level 3 in one or more of the following areas:
• Theatrical and media make-up
• Hairdressing
