The VTCT Level 2 Certificate in Women’s Hairdressing is a vocational qualification for those who have completed a Level 1 qualification or a successful skills test and interview and are seeking a career as a junior hairdresser / stylist.
The majority of your learning will take place in the College’s own well-equipped salon which is a real working environment. In addition, you will also undertake work experience in an external commercial salon. This course will also develop your communication and wider personal skills which are essential in this type of work.
This qualification is recognised by the UK’s lead hairdressing professional association and will prepare you for a career as a junior hairdresser/ stylist.
For this course you will need to have achieved following (subject to awarding body conditions):
· Hairdressing or skills test / interview outcome
On receipt of your application to study this course you will be invited to attend an admissions interview with a member of the teaching team to discuss the course and its requirements further.
This qualification is based on the national occupational standards for a variety of hairdressing techniques and includes all the required elements to work effectively as a junior hairdresser/stylist. You must achieve all mandatory and optional units which include:
• Working in the hair industry
• Follow health and safety practice in the salon
• Client consultation for hair services
• Shampoo and condition the hair and scalp
• The art of dressing hair
• Cut women’s hair
• Colour and lighten hair
• Plaiting and twisting hair
• Display stock
• Promote products
• Create an image based on a theme within the hair and beauty sector
It is an expectation that you will complete all course work at home. On the days that you aren’t expected to attend college, you are also required to practice practical skills in order to develop techniques and confidence fully.
All units contain internal and external assessment elements and include an externally set and externally marked theory exams. Formative and summative practical assessments will be carried out for each unit. You will be continually assessed through written means including knowledge questions, assignments, oral questions and online exams, which are marked externally. You will also build a portfolio as part of your qualification.
Learners who achieve this qualification could progress directly into employment in a variety of contexts, which include:
• commercial salons
• independent/self-employed/freelance/home-based settings
Whilst the primary purpose of this qualification is to prepare learners for employment, learners may choose to develop their knowledge and skills further in the following area:
• Level 3 Diploma in Women’s hairdressing
• Level 2 Diploma in Barbering
A full uniform, kit and portfolio file will need to be purchased for this course. You will be advised of these and their cost at your admissions interview.
Photographic evidence and reflections of each client service carried out is needed for all elements of this course to reference portfolio assessments.
