This course is designed to embed knowledge and develop your practical skills in health and safety, consultation, creative art of cutting, dressing hair, shampooing, conditioning and the artistic skill of colouring and lightening the hair. This course is designed to build confidence in displaying and promoting products. The majority of your learning will take place in the college hair salons in a real working environment. Additionally, you will undertake 30 hours work experience in an external hair salon. The course will also develop communication and personal skills, which are essential at this level, as well as the ability to promote services in a salon environment.

Entry Requirements

4 GCSE’s at grade D or 3-4


During the course the following units are included, adding up to a total of 52 credits

• Follow health and safety practice in the salon – 3 credits
• Client consultation for hair services – 3 credits
• Working in the hair industry – 4 credits
• The art of dressing hair – 5 credits
• Cut womens hair – 8 credits
• Colour and lighten hair – 10 credits
• Shampoo and condition the hair and scalp – 3 credits
• Display stock to promote sales in a salon – 3 credits
• Promote products and services to clients in a salon – 3 credits
• Create an image based on a theme within the hair and scalp beauty sector – 7 credits
• Plaiting and twisting – 3 credits
