Overview
The VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Beauty Make-up Techniques is a technical level qualification for those who wish to pursue a career as an employed and/or self-employed make-up artist. This course will develop your communication and wider personal skills which are essential in this type of work. You will also be required to undertake work experience.
Entry Requirements
For this course you will need to have achieved one of the following:
· Level 2 Diploma in Hair and Make-up Artistry
· Level 2 Diploma in Beauty Therapy
On receipt of your application to study this course you will be invited to attend an admissions interview with a member of the teaching team to discuss the course and its requirements further.
Content
This qualification is based on the national occupational standards for a variety of make-up application techniques and includes all the required elements to work effectively as a make-up artist. You must achieve all mandatory units which include:
• Health and safety in the salon
• Client care and consultation
• Photographic make-up
• Anatomy and physiology for make-up services
• Bridal make-up
• Airbrush make-up
• Individual eyelash extensions
• False eyelash application
• Cosmetic make-up science
• Promote and sell products and services
Alongside your main programme of study, you will also study either GCSE or Functional Skill in English and Maths if you have not achieved a GCSE grade 4 or above. If you have achieved a grade 4 or above in GCSE English and Maths you will engage in extending these skills through a directed study programme.
Assessment
All units contain internal and external assessment elements and include an externally set and externally marked theory exam, employer engagement activities and a practical graded synoptic assessment using an externally set practical assignment marked through external moderation. Each unit is graded pass, merit, Distinction and an overall grade is awarded with all grades calculated together to gain a level mark pass, merit or distinction and awarded on completion.
GCSE and Functional Skills qualifications are assessed through external examination and portfolio work.

Progression
On completion of this programme, you will be eligible to become a member of the British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (BABTAC). As a make-up artist, you could progress directly into employment in a variety of contexts, which include:
• commercial salons
• independent/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings
• cruise liners
• photographer’s assistant
• department stores
Whilst the primary purpose of this qualification is to prepare you for employment, you may choose to develop your knowledge and skills further by completing a specialist qualification at Level 4 in one or more of the following areas:
• salon management
• advanced face or body make-up
Additional information
A full uniform, kit and sketch book need to be purchased for this course. You will be advised of these and their cost at your admissions interview.
