The course combines practical work with related theory in preparation for fashion/photographic, theatrical & TV make-up and hair. The skills you will develop include casualty, special effects, prosthetic making & application of postiche. Also this course will develop your communication and personal skills, which are essential in this type of work.
It is a course requirement that all students where a uniform for health and safety reasons and purchase the stated kit to carry out Media Make-up & hair treatments.
You must have prior training in hairdressing to enrol on this course to ensure you have the appropriate skills to work with wigs & postiche.
Candidates will need to have a keen interest in the hair and media industry,plus have achieved level 2 in hair, beauty or media and at least 4 GCSE grade C.
During the course, you will study both mandatory and optional units to achieve 58 credits.
Mandatory units are taken in:
• Cutting and styling techniques for performers
• Avant-Garde hair and make-up
• Creative make-up design for productions and industry demands
• Apply prosthetic pieces and bald caps
• Special effects make-up
• Create, dress and fit facial postiche
• Body art for competition
• Create, cast small prosthetic pieces and bald caps
• Wig dressing, fitting and maintenance
Assessment will take place within the college environment and in the work place. Questions will be asked on each unit to satisfy there is an understanding of related underpinning knowledge.
Types of assessment are:
– Written assignment / mood board creation/ set tutor team work projects
– Practical observation/ consultation techniques
– Written end of unit exam
– Oral questions
– Work experience log- Theatre/ fashion/TV
Throughout the course, you will be expected to produce a photographic portfolio in preparation for employment, plus an image research file to support your creative development.
The college will support you in work experience and will arrange a variety of opportunities for you to work in a real work environment, but you will be expected to network and set up your own work-based activities to prepare you for a freelance career.
Successful candidates can progress to the work place or to degree in specialist make-up techniques.
