Macclesfield College’s Art and Design students received a special surprise this week when two former fashion students came back to visit the department. Samantha Bunting and Polly Burton, came to share their experiences as undergraduates to the current year one UAL Diploma Art and Design students.

Polly Burton Visits Fashion Students

The students on our fashion pathway have been busy working towards their end of year major projects, as well as an additional unit entitled, ‘Opportunities for progression in Art and Design’.

As part of this project the students have been asked to gather research on progression opportunities within the fashion education and industry to help them gain further knowledge about the wide range of higher education courses and careers for their future in fashion.

Fashion course leader Angela Devoti is always keen to hear how her students have gotten on after leaving College. She said; ‘‘Our former students always keep in touch and I am always excited to hear how they have been progressing on their degree courses. Our current fashion students received some great advice and information about the opportunities for progression into higher education fashion degree courses. Polly and Samantha’s presentations were stunning and both included some wonderful examples of their work. This gave our current students a true insight into the working practices for both design and fashion styling and image making.”

UAL year one fashion student, Millie Leicester found the presentations inspiring. She said; “Both Polly and Sam’s work was incredible. It has inspired me to keep on challenging my own style. I really love the diversity in their work.”

Former student Polly Burton, currently studying BA (Hons) Fashion at Northumbria University, spoke highly of her time at Macclesfield College. She said; “College was the best two years of my life. I loved how the UAL course challenged my creativity and gave me so much freedom in what I wanted to do. It prepared me so well for my first year at Northumbria University and has given me skills which I’ll be able to carry throughout my university experience. My college course really helped me to progress successfully, Northumbria University was definitely the right degree course for me, I have really enjoyed moving to Newcastle and after working alongside the fourth year degree students as they prepare for graduate fashion week next month has been a great experience. I know I am in a great position to develop my work and during my second year of my course I will be working in industry on work placement. I look forward to hopefully be working for a high end designer after my degree.”

Polly and Samantha completed their UAL course with distinctions in 2017 and went on to receive offers to study on the best fashion courses in the UK both for design and fashion styling, and image making. Both guests gave insightful presentations and the year one students enjoyed finding out about the University courses and their structure, as well as enjoying observing some of the former student’s completed project work.

Danielle Bowditch, a current UAL year one fashion student, commented: ‘‘I really enjoyed hearing about the former student’s experiences from being at college and into their degree courses. It was so inspiring to see such amazing design and fashion image making and this has given me further ideas to look at other related fashion areas when researching universities, there are so many exciting choices which give great opportunities to gain industry experience whilst studying.’’

Omar Salkini, who is also studying on the UAL Art & Design fashion course went on to say; ‘‘The fashion pathway has opened up so many new options for me to explore. I enjoy both design and fashion image making and meeting former students and viewing their work was great. I am very interested in working across both areas of the industry in the future.’’

Both Polly and Samantha enjoyed returning to Macclesfield College and speaking to this year’s students. They said; ‘‘We always love coming back to the fashion studio at College. There are so many great memories here and it has been lovely to meet the next year of fashion students. We look forward to coming to watch the end of year fashion show next month.’’
