Former Macclesfield College student Melanie Knight recently returned to the College to share her experiences as a degree student – Melanie is currently in her final year of studying for a BA (HONS) in Fashion Styling and Image Making at The University of Salford.

Melanie shared with the group her experiences of developing her skills and knowledge in fashion styling and image making and explained to students the course and structure. Students had the chance to view Melanie’s incredible portfolio as she discussed the inspirations behind each shoot.

Current year one Fashion student Jessica Brown commented, “From meeting Melanie and hearing about her success I have learned more about the styling and image making course at The University of Salford. It was amazing to see what the course is like first-hand from a student who has previously been in my shoes. Melanie has really inspired me to keep working hard because the possibilities for progression in the fashion industry are endless.”

Fellow student Samantha Bunting also said, “I found the presentation Melanie gave really interesting. I enjoyed learning about the styling and image making course and the course content. I loved Melanie’s photographs and it was great to see how well you can do in the fashion styling and image making industry.”

As part of her course Melanie gained work experience working with leading image maker, Letty Schmiterlow. As she approaches the end of her course this June she is currently preparing for her showcase at Graduate Fashion Week, the world’s leading event celebrating the creativity of students and graduates within fashion. Graduate Fashion Week presents over a 1,000 of the very best students and graduates from the most influential and inspiring universities.

She has been put forward and entered into the photography award for Graduate Fashion Week as well as the styling and creative direction award. Melanie has also been selected from her group to present her work at The British Fashion Council this June.

Angela Devoti, course leader for Fashion at the College, said, “It was such a joy to have Melanie back with us, her presentation gave our year one students a wonderful insight into the prestigious fashion styling and image making course at The University of Salford. The group really enjoyed looking at Melanie’s portfolio of stunning images.”

She continued, “I want to congratulate Melanie on her incredible news on getting selected by the British Fashion Council to present her final year project to the panel, I wish her every success in the future!” Melanie commented, “It was great to be back and the year one group were all so lovely! They all had lots of questions to ask me about my course and seemed very excited for their journey ahead. They are a very talented young group of students who could really make an impact in the fashion industry, whether that be in design or fashion styling and image making – exciting times ahead for all of them!”
