Macclesfield College is delighted to announce a new and exciting collaborative partnership with the University of Derby, which marks the next phase in the College’s ambitious plans for the expansion of its Higher Education (degree level) curriculum offer. Initially, three University of Derby courses will be delivered at the Macclesfield College Campus, with plans to introduce a number of additional degree-level courses in the near future.
The College was commended by the University for its ambition in seeking to meet the Higher Education needs of Macclesfield and the surrounding area. One of Macclesfield College’s key strategic priorities is to deliver higher level qualifications that are innovative, dynamic and industry-relevant and which address the specific skills gaps identified by local and regional employers. The College’s aspirational ‘Stay Local and Achieve Higher’ ambition for the local community is intended to support widening participation from the local community in degree level study; graduates are in increasing demand from local employers and they can earn up to £10,000 per annum more than non-graduates.
As an Ofsted-rated ‘Good’ college, Macclesfield College has sought to enter into a partnership with a university with an excellent track record; the University of Derby’s National Student Survey (NSS) data places it amongst the Top Ten Universities in England for student satisfaction with teaching and feedback. The University has also been awarded the highest status of ‘Gold’ in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) which is a measure of outstanding practice in teaching and learning.
Initially, Macclesfield College will be offering two University of Derby-awarded teacher training courses which will qualify students for an exciting and rewarding career teaching learners aged 14+ in settings ranging from colleges, academies and secondary schools to prisons and voluntary organisations. Both these courses have been awarded an ‘outstanding’ rating by Ofsted – its highest accolade. Additionally, the College will offer the Foundation Degree (Children and Young People), aimed at those working in a range of settings supporting the 0-25 age group. As a result of the new partnership, all three of these courses can offer direct progression towards the completion of a full degree for students who are ambitious to continue even further with their studies.
The college is very much looking forward to developing the partnership further in the near future in order to be able to respond to the higher education ambitions of its local community.
Rachel Kay, Principal & CEO of Macclesfield College stated: “I am extremely pleased to launch our new partnership with the University of Derby; this supports our five year strategic plan and our mission to provide high quality and affordable higher education locally”.
Professor Malcolm Todd, Deputy Vice-Chancellor/Provost (Academic and Student Experience) at the University of Derby, added: “I am delighted that the University of Derby has formed a new partnership with Macclesfield College to build on our shared focus of delivering an excellent student experience and high quality degree level learning programmes.
“Working closely with the college will enable us to determine the educational needs of the town and surrounding areas, with a view to addressing skills gaps in the local market and providing a future-fit workforce.”
