Macclesfield Town Football Academy were crowned EFL CEFA champions after defeating Swindon Town A 3-1 at St. George’s Park.
The Academy, founded in summer 2019 in partnership with Macclesfield College, has ended its first season on a high. After a gripping championship final against Swindon Town A team, Macclesfield Town Academy proved themselves champions, winning 3-1 on Wednesday afternoon. Despite being the Academy’s debut season, and Covid-19 causing a nation-wide lockdown, Macclesfield Town Academy showed their skill and hard work, making them deserving of the coveted title.
Playing in St George’s Park, England’s National Team training ground, makes the win even more special to the team. Paul McGuire, Macclesfield Town Pro-Football Academy’s Manager noted: ‘A day like this gives the lads a look at what potentially could be their future if they continue the hard work.’ He continued, ‘From coming up with the plan of starting up a youth development side, to reaching a National CEFA final in less than 2 years is a great achievement for everyone involved and something we’re immensely proud of as a group.’
Lucy Reed Vice Principal Curriculum and Quality said: ‘This is a huge achievement for the Macclesfield Football Academy players and one that is well deserved. The Academy has gone from strength to strength this year and this result is reflective of the talents of the players and the support of the dedicated staff involved in the partnership.’
The Academy is a Pro-Football Academy run alongside Macclesfield College, which allows the players to earn a Level 3 BTEC qualification in Sports Coaching and Development while also training with a professional football club. The College is extremely proud of the program which offers a pathway for young people to continue playing high level, competitive football alongside their education.
