AWARD-winning FE provider Macclesfield College is about to drive its course provision even further, by introducing a highly innovative Golf Academy.
The first FE Academy of its kind to be launched in Cheshire, this exclusive and exciting programme has been designed to strike the perfect balance between professional golfing tuition and education, and industry-ready sports qualifications that are recognised and valued by employers and universities alike.
Developed to complement and sit alongside the College’s existing, highly successful sport academy which is delivered in conjunction with local association football club Macclesfield FC, the new Golf Academy is set to officially swing into action from 1st September 2021 with a limited cohort of just 20 students, all of whom will be given an incredible opportunity to gain practical experience, theoretical and performance-related knowledge and professional coaching in one of the region’s most dynamic sporting and commercial sectors.
This highly structured sports programme is the perfect launchpad for a career in the exciting and varied world of golf, either as a touring or resident golfing professional, within the coaching and training sector, working on regional, national and even international tours, as part of a club team or in the sport’s burgeoning retail industry.
Core mandatory units of study for the new Golf Academy at Macclesfield College – which will form the theoretical elements of the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport – will include fitness training, performance and lifestyle and wellbeing, alongside professional-standard golfing tuition.
Macclesfield College’s new Golf Academy – which will move to the practical trial and development phase early in the New Year – was officially launched on campus on Tuesday 8th December by Assistant Principal for Vocational Curriculum, Chantelle Dewberry and PGA (Professional Golfers’ Association), Ben Stanier.
Local lad Ben turned professional at the age of 18 and currently competes on the PGA North Region Circuit. A graduate from the University of Birmingham, Ben is the perfect role model for the College’s new Golf Academy students, as he started out on his successful career path by gaining a Double grade Distinction in a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Sport (Performance and Excellence) at Myerscough College, near Preston.
To apply for the new Golf Academy, candidates must have achieved either a minimum of 4 GCSEs at Grade 5 or above (ideally including English and PE or Sport Studies), or a relevant Level 1 qualification, such as the BTEC Level 1 Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure.
“I am really excited to announce the launch of our new Golf Academy, here at Macclesfield College,” says Assistant Principal for Vocational Curriculum, Chantelle Dewberry. “Golf is an extremely popular sport here in Cheshire and the surrounding region, with so many different career paths and opportunities available to dedicated and ambitious young students with a natural aptitude for sport and the level of commitment required to gain their qualifications.
“To be the very first FE College in the Cheshire to offer this kind of course provision is particularly pleasing, and we are equally delighted to be partnering with local clubs,” concludes Chantelle. “As well as the theoretical and practical elements of this trailblazing course, there will also be visits from guest speakers and opportunities for supervised tours and trips, to help our Golf Academy students develop their game and maximise their career potential. We can’t wait to get started.”
