This year the college has come on leaps and bounds within the education sector. There have been a wide range of achievements to celebrate throughout the year, including Ofsted results, the launch of new courses, and partnerships with both a celebrity chef and an English Football League team.
When reflecting on the past year Chief Executive and Principal Rachel Kay said the following: “We’re really proud of what has been accomplished here at Macclesfield College in 2018 by both students and teachers alike.
She continued, “the successes over the past three years have given me immense pride but the past year certainly stands out as one of the best.”
Let’s take a moment to look back on 2018’s best moments…
Ofsted rated us as ‘Officially Good’
We proved the value of effective leadership and an employer-led approach to further and higher education after lifting Ofsted’s previous report of ‘Requires Improvement’ to ‘Good’ in just 18 months!
Ofsted inspectors praised Rachel Kay for inspiring and motivating the whole college team and for placing a high emphasis on employer engagement and employability. This certainly paid off, with 93% of students securing full-time employment or furthering their study at the end of the previous school year.
Rachel was thrilled with the report and added: “Our vision for the college is to create an aspirational environment where staff and students strive to be the best they can be and all students take full advantage of their right and responsibility to learn.”

The launch of new and exciting courses
It’s been a hugely exciting year here as our student provision has expanded massively. This year we launched our all new Animal Care and Management courses, which offer prospective students the opportunity to gain a variety of knowledge and skills such as maintaining the health of animals, animal nutrition, behaviour and communication and much more.
Our new catering provision Whites Chef Academy is now open for applications for September 2019. This is an exclusive programme for aspiring young chefs and catering professionals, which is spearheaded by celebrity chef Aiden Byrne. We held a brilliant launch party here in October during one of our busy open evenings which was a huge success and where Aiden also attended.
This year also saw the launch of our new Healthcare Cadets course. This prestigious and highly sought after course is run in partnership with healthcare employers and will provide opportunities for you to go straight into an apprenticeship in nursing or a related role.
Department of Education table success
In the spring we were thrilled to discover that Macclesfield College secured the highest achievement rates for apprenticeships across both Cheshire and Greater Manchester following the release of Department of Education (DfE) league tables for the 2016/2017 academic year. The statistics put us above 14 other colleges in the region and over 3 percent higher than the national average.
This coincided perfectly with the earlier statements received in our Ofsted report!
We teamed up with The Silkmen
During the summer we were delighted to announce our partnership with Macclesfield Town Football Club for the 2018/19 season as they made their return to League Two of the English Football League.
If you’ve attended a home match this season you will have seen the college logo on the back of the team’s first kit, a pitch-side board representing us and an appearance in the club’s match day programme.
On top of this, MTFC also gave us ten U25 season tickets which have been enjoyed by successful students throughout the season so far.
The Macclesfield Manifesto
We recently launched an exciting Manifesto which pledges to recruit 100 apprentices in just 100 days from January 2019. It has been formed as a basis to support local and regional businesses across Macclesfield and East Cheshire.
Rachel Kay announced the initiative alongside local MP David Rutley at a meeting with community figureheads on Friday 30th November.
The North Cheshire Chamber of Commerce is also supporting the project in a bid to support local and regional businesses and to help contribute towards East Cheshire’s growing economy.
We’re looking forward to updating you on the progress of the Manifesto as January goes on!
This is only a handful of the many things we celebrated across the year. If you want to read our various news articles then these are available on the website. You can also access all course information from this site.
As a college we’re incredibly excited for what 2019 will bring. We’re especially looking forward to this year’s Apprenticeship Awards, open evenings, end of year activities, student results and welcoming a whole new set of learners to the college in September 2019.
