Financial Support for Students on a Higher Education Course
Students studying for Higher Nationals or a Foundation Degree at Macclesfield College should apply to Student Finance England for student loan assistance. Students can apply for a Maintenance Loan or a Tuition fee loan. Application forms and guidance notes are available from www.gov.uk/student-finance
Students studying Higher Education courses are not eligible for fee waivers due to benefits or low income and must go through the Higher Education financial support route.
Additional Support for Higher Education students - DSA
If students require support for an additional need, such as Dyslexia they should apply for the Disabled Students Allowance.
The DSA helps pay for extra costs which the student may incur as a direct result of their disability, mental-health condition or specific-learning difficulty. The allowance can help with the cost of having a non-medical helper, items of specialist equipment – such as a laptop, travel and/or other course-related costs.
DSA can be awarded to students who;
- Are on full-time and part-time undergraduate courses including Open University and other distance learning courses; or
- Are on certain full-time and part-time postgraduate courses (courses which the student needs a degree or equivalent to get on to) including Open University and other distance-learning courses; and
- Can prove that they have a disability, mental-health condition or a specific learning difficulty which affects their ability to study – including:
- Specific-learning difficulties
- Mental-health issues
- Sensory impairments
- Chronic medical conditions
- Progressive medical conditions
DSA’s are grants, which do not have to be repaid and are not affected by the household income.
An application for DSA needs to be done as soon as possible as it can take up to 12 weeks for approval. The applicant needs to provide current evidence of their condition – Dyslexia students will require a Diagnostic Assessment Report to accompany their application. Please speak to the Learning Support section in Student Services for more information.
