what does a craft bricklayer do?

Craft bricklayers are a vital role in the construction industry, mainly working on the projects in the new build, refurbishment and heritage
sectors.

Their main duty is to lay out bricks, brick specials and other materials
to repair complex walls and features such as chimneys and decorative masonry
work. They will often work outside, at heights and in most weathers.

Craft bricklayers have many responsibilities. Their core duties are:

  • Always maintain a clear and safe worksite, ensuring that all health and safety requirements are met.
  • Organise and plan site work, such as what materials and tools will be used throughout the project.
  • Lead and supervise a bricklaying team through the delivery of a construction project.
  • Carrying out their work in compliance with relevant and current building regulations and quality standards.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders, clients and other workers in the construction trade.
  • Modify, maintain, repair or place different masonry types.
  • Construct complex masonry structures to industry standards and specifications.

Facilities

Macclesfield College offers outstanding Bricklaying facilities for apprentices attending the college on day release from work.

These facilities include dedicated apprenticeship workrooms equipped with state-of-the-art bricklaying equipment and tools, providing apprentices with hands-on experience and practical training.

The college fosters a friendly atmosphere, creating a supportive learning environment where apprentices can develop their electrical skills with confidence.

Duration

A craft bricklayer apprenticeship will 18 months with a 3-month End Point Assessment period.

English & Maths

Apprentices who don’t have a Level 2 English and Maths qualification, they will need to achieve this before taking the End Point Assessment.

While apprentices with an education, legacy statement and a health and care plan the minimum English and Maths requirement is entry level 3.

Knowledge, Skills & Behaviours

Knowledge:

Craft bricklayers will need the following knowledge:

  • Being aware of health, safety and welfare regulations and standards such as fire safety, manual handling, healthy and safety at work, working at heights, injuries, electrical safety and working in confined spaces.
  • Understand the types of incidents or accidents that could take place during a project and the right protocols to take if an accident happens.
  • Being aware of quality assurance requirements.
  • Understanding how different standards and regulations such as the British Standards, Building Regulations and NHQB, need to be met when completing bricklaying activities.
  • Knowing how to operate equipment safely such as power tools and bricklayer tools.
  • Understanding different bricklaying techniques and construction methods for decorative features, arches, corbelling, reinforcement systems and chimneys.
  • Being able to interpret information from drawings, specifications and digital methods.
  • Understanding the different principles of building construction regarding fire safety, masonry defects and structural stability.
  • Knowledge of heritage building techniques and considerations.
  • Understanding of any modern methods used in construction.

 

Skills

Craft bricklayers will need the following skills:

  • Having good time management skills. Time management skills can help craft bricklayers organise and identity on production plan targets.
  • Having good knowledge of health and safety standards and applying these standards whilst working on construction projects. This could be through that all equipment operates correctly and has no faults.
  • Having good design skills – Craft bricklayers will have to interpret and extract information from drawings and production plans. They will then have to apply this information to the project.
  • Having good communication and teamworking skills - craft bricklayers will often work in teams during their duties.
  • Technical skills – craft bricklayers will need to know how to set and build a variety of different brick types including decorative panels, curved masonry work, decorative brick features, angled brickwork, axed arches and surrounding haunch brickwork.

Craft bricklayers will be expected to:

  • Promote health, safety environmental and sustainability principles to other workers.
  • Be supported of an inclusive culture.
  • Take responsibility for their own work and for their own health and safety whilst working at heights.
