What is motor vehicle service and maintenance technician?

Motor vehicle and service maintenance technicians are a key part of the manufacturing in the Automotive industry. Their main responsibility is to repair and service light vehicles, including vans and cars.

Technicians will work in a variety of different garages ranging from large dealership companies to smaller garages. Motor vehicle technicians who work in larger dealerships will report to the Workshop Controller. While technicians who work in smaller garages will report directly to the owner or the Garage Manager.

Duration

Motor vehicle technician will have many responsibilities. Their core duties are:

  • Inspecting and servicing vehicles.
  • Carrying out diagnose faults and repairs on vehicles.

  • Maintaining a healthy and safe workshop.
English & Maths

The minimum English and Maths qualification is Entry Level 3. For apprentices without a health and care plan, legacy statement or education they will need to achieve a Level 2 in English and Maths before taking their End Point Assessment.

Knowledge, Skills & Behaviours

Knowledge:

Mot vehicle technicians will need to have the following knowledge:

  • Knowledge of how vehicle service and repair is affected by legislative, regulatory and technical requirements.
  • An understanding of different procedures used for taking care of equipment and the workshop.
  • An understanding of how the business works from an operational perspective such as business targets.
  • Knowing how to develop positive working relationship in the workplace and with customers.
  • An understanding how to conduct routine services and inspection procedures.
  • Knowledge of the construction and operation of different vehicle components and systems.
  • Knowledge of what hybrid systems, alternative fuels and electrical systems are used in vehicles.
  • An understanding the different legal requirements when fitting accessories and carrying out vehicle modifications.
  • Knowledge of vehicle emissions.
  • Apprentices will need to understand about the construction and operation of different car components such as braking systems, engine and transmission systems, advanced electrical systems and engine and gear calculations.

 

Skills:

Motor vehicle service and maintenance technicians will need the following skills:

  • Safety skills: Motor vehicle service technicians should have good knowledge of how to operate equipment safely and be aware of any potential hazards within the workplace.
  • Knowledge skills: Motor vehicle service technicians should have knowledge of the different diagnostic equipment vehicles use,
  • Repair and Maintenance Skills: Motor vehicle service technicians should be capable of performing essential tasks related to the removal and replacement of vehicle parts, testing components, and servicing and inspecting vehicles.
  • Reporting skills: Motor vehicle service technicians will need to use reporting skills throughout their job for example when they are reporting faults on a vehicle.

Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance apprentices will be expected to:

  • Demonstrate a passion for engineering.
  • Build effective relationships with customers, stakeholders and colleagues.
