At Macclesfield College, the Construction Skills course offers a dynamic learning experience across various elements of construction. You’ll have the opportunity to engage with specialised centres within our well equipped Construction Centre, each designed to focus on different trades and skills.

This hands on approach ensures you gain comprehensive knowledge and practical experience in a range of construction disciplines. With access to excellent facilities and guidance from industry professionals, you’ll be prepared to excel in your chosen field and meet the demands of the Construction Industry.

Entry Level: Construction Skills

Overview

What will I study?

During this course you will explore a full range of units including, but not limited to:
  • Generic Units, Bricklaying, Joinery
  • Wall Tiling, Construction, Operations, Painting & Decorating
  • Carpentry
  • Plastering, Plumbing.
Alongside your main programme of study you will also study either GCSE or Functional Skills in English and maths if you have not achieved a GCSE grade 4 or above.

What career or further study opportunities will be available after completion?

On successful achievement of this course, you may wish to study a Level 1 course in Bricklaying, Carpentry & Joinery, Electrical or Plumbing at the College.

What are the entry requirements for this course & what qualifications will I gain upon completion?

There are no formal qualifications required.  This course may suit students who have no or very few qualifications and prefer to take part in practical based learning. On successful completion of this course you will gain a City & Guilds Entry Level Award in Construction Skills.

How long does it take to finish the course?

This is a full-time programme for one academic year.

Overview

What will I study?

  • Health and safety, law and sustainability in construction
  • Building technology, measurement and surveying techniques
  • Design principles and digital technology in the built environment
  • Project management, commercial business and relationship management
  • Construction science, mathematical techniques and data analysis
  • Problem solving through client briefs and live project work
  • Communication, collaboration and critical thinking skills
  • Research, literacy and numeracy development for industry applications.

What career or further study opportunities will be available after completion?

Successful completion of this course opens the door to a range of exciting opportunities, including progression into highly skilled employment, Apprenticeships or further study at a higher level, such as university. Whether you choose to specialise in design, surveying or a related field, this qualification provides a strong foundation for a successful career in the construction industry.

What are the entry requirements for this course & what qualifications will I gain upon completion?

You will need 5 GCSEs grade 4 or above including English and maths. On successful completion of this programme, you will gain a T Level in Design, Surveying and Planning. (Equivalent to 3 A Levels)

How long does it take to finish the course?

This is a full-time programme for 2 academic years

TRIP/EMPLOYERS

Throughout your Construction Skills course, you will benefit from regular guest talks by industry professionals at all levels. These experts will share valuable insights and advice to enhance your learning experience.

You will also have the opportunity to participate in site visits to major construction projects, allowing you to see industry applications of your skills and knowledge.

Additionally, internal visits from construction companies will provide you with practical knowledge and a broader understanding of the industry. These experiences will enrich your education and prepare you for a successful career in construction.
