In response to the soaring demand for skilled professionals in the trade sector, Macclesfield College proudly announces the integration of Plumbing courses into its Construction Department, starting September 2024. These courses, introduced amid record-high vacancies in the construction industry, aim to address the pressing need for qualified plumbers as highlighted by the UK Trade Skills Index 2023.
The newly released UK Trade Skills Index 2023, commissioned by Checkatrade, brings to light an “alarming skills gap” within the construction and trades sector, with vacancies reaching unprecedented levels. Within this crucial landscape, the report identifies plumbing as one of the most sought-after specialisms alongside carpentry, bricklaying, and electrical work. Specifically, the report outlines a demand for 73,700 plumbers by 2032, underlining the immediate necessity for skilled professionals in this field.
Macclesfield College, renowned for its commitment to aligning education with industry needs, has taken proactive steps to address this demand. The introduction of plumbing demonstrates the College’s dedication to providing students with practical skills that not only meet the demands of the job market, but also contribute to filling the skills gap in the construction sector.
Principal & CEO, Rachel Kay, commented, “We understand the urgency highlighted by the UK Trade Skills Index, and we are proud to play a pivotal role in addressing the skills gap by offering these new courses. Macclesfield College is committed to equipping our students with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in these vital trades, ensuring they are well-prepared to meet the demands of the growing industry.”
