This is a vocational programme which will provide learners with the knowledge and understanding a broad range of scientific topics and methods which will allow them to go on and continue their studies in science at a higher level or prepare them for work in a science-based industry.

Entry Requirements

For this course you will need to have achieved the following (subject to awarding body conditions):

GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English or Maths at grade 4 or higher, and Science at Grade 4 or higher, and I other subject at Grade 4 or higher, or equivalent prior achievement at level 2.

On receipt of your application to study this course you will be invited to attend an admissions interview with a member of the teaching team to discuss the course and its requirements further.

Course Content

During this course you will study five mandatory units and two optional units. As well as classroom delivery, you will also undertake placement in a real work environment with a requirement of 50 hours.

Mandatory units include:

· Principles and Applications of Science I
· Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques
· Science Investigation Skills
· Laboratory Techniques and their Application
· Principles and Applications of Science II
· Investigative Project
· Contemporary Issues in Science

Optional units may include:

· Genetics and Genetic
· Applications of Inorganic Chemistry
· Applications of Organic Chemistry
· Forensic Evidence, Collection and Analysis
· Forensic Fire Investigation
· Physiology of Human Body Systems

Alongside your main programme of study, you will also study either GCSE or Functional Skill in English and Maths if you have not achieved a GCSE grade 4 or above.

Assessment

The units Principles and Applications of Science I and II are assessed by a short terminal examination. The units of Science Investigation Skills and Contemporary Issues in Science as assessed through a task set by BTEC and externally marked.

All other units are assessed by a range of assignments which can take the form of report, posters, presentations or similar.

GCSE and Functional Skills qualifications are assessed through external examination and portfolio work.

Progression

On successful completion of this course you may wish to:

· Apply to a university or other further education establishment for a degree course or similar,
· Apply to study the Level 4 HNC in Applied Biology or Chemistry,
· Apply for an apprenticeship in a science-based field or another related workplace.


Alternatively, you could progress in the workplace in a variety of job roles, such as:

• Scientific technicians in research, healthcare or commercial firms or laboratories
• Roles in the environmental, water or agriculture science industry
• Roles in pharmaceutical production or the food industry
