Course Detail

Further course information

Here at Macclesfield College we offer both Functional Skills and GCSE English. We have various course start dates depending on which course / level is to be completed.

GCSE is now the new 9-1 format.

Functional Skills offers you a broad range of subject knowledge in a functional, real life context. Learners often feel this helps contextualise the questions and allows for better understanding of the subject. This qualification can be used as a stepping stone towards GCSE.

Courses are suitable if you wish to improve skills to support your children with homework.

Classes take place either in the evening or during the day for approximately 2 – 2.5 hours per week. There is an expectation that you will complete some self-study at home in conjunction with your course. This will vary depending on your level and ability, but as a guideline, you should allow 2-3 hours a week to complete homework and self-study activities.

Only one level/subject may be studied per year.

Entry Requirements

Completion of an assessment is essential - this will take place with one of the teaching team, please choose an assessment session from the drop down below.

It is important that you have the appropriate level of understanding to start the course. Your initial assessment score is related to the level at which you are ready to study. It is not possible to offer an alternative level as the initial assessment is an accurate tool at predicting capability. In the unlikely event that the initial assessment suggests you study a level you have already achieved, we may suggest that you complete some self-study and attempt the assessment again at a later date.

You are welcome to brush up on your English skills before taking the assessment. BBC Bitesize is an excellent way to do this.

This course is open to learners 19 and over who do not already have a grade C/4.
