Highfield Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid

This qualification is aimed at individuals wishing to become a paediatric first-aider in the workplace with a responsibility for the welfare of infants and children. This qualification is intended for learners already working or preparing to work in the industry and it meets the requirements for paediatric first aid outlined in the Early Years Foundation Stage.

Entry Requirements

Learners are required to be 16 years of age prior to certification, it is also advised that learners have a minimum of level 1 in English to enable them to complete the assessment.

Course Content

Learners gaining this qualification will know that first aid is the responsibility of everyone involved in the working environment. Topics within this course are regarded by the Early Years Foundation Stage as being important to maintaining good practice in the safe, prompt and effective treatment of injuries and ill health of infants and children who are under the care of trained personnel.

Topics include

• Understand the role and responsibilities of a paediatric first aider
• Be able to assess an emergency situation safely
• Be able to provide first aid for an infant or a child who are unresponsive
• Be able to provide first aid for an infant or a child who are choking
• Be able to provide first aid to an infant or a child who has external bleeding or is suffering from shock
• Know how to provide first aid to an infant or a child with bites, stings and minor injuries
• Be able to provide first aid to an infant or a child with suspected injuries to bones, muscles and joints and suspected head and spinal injuries
• Know how to provide first aid to an infant or a child with conditions affecting the eyes, ears and nose or if they have an acute medical condition or a sudden illness
• Know how to provide first aid to an infant or a child who is experiencing extremes of body temperature, suspected poisoning, burns and scalds and electric shock
• Be able to provide first aid for anaphylaxis

Assessment

This qualification is assessed by a practical demonstration and a multiple-choice theory test.

Progression

Individuals achieving this qualification can progress onto Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work.

Additional Information

This qualification meets the requirements for Paediatric First Aid outlined in the Early Years Foundation Stage.

The qualification is valid for a period of 3 years, after which point learners will need to retake the course. In addition to this it is recommended that learners refresh their knowledge annually.
