The UAL Level 3 Diploma and Extended Diploma in Creative Practice: Art, Design and Communication are qualifications for post-16 students looking to pursue a specialist career in the creative industries. Both qualifications provide students with the necessary industry relevant skills, knowledge and understanding to access appropriate entry level roles, training programmes or apprenticeships in the creative sector, or apply for progression to related higher education courses

This two-year course provides a varied but focussed programme giving students the skills, experience and knowledge to progress to Higher Education and a career in the Creative Industries. Students will learn in a practical and theoretical way and explore how art and design can be applied to employment and the community.

Qualification aims

To enable the candidate to:

1. Have a critical and contextual awareness of different perspectives and approaches within art, design or communication
2. Research, analyse and evaluate relevant information and ideas in order to develop creative solutions
3. Understand, adapt and safely use appropriate and practical methods and skills for creative production
4. Solve complex problems through the application of practical, theoretical and technical understanding
5. Critically review the effectiveness and appropriateness of methods, actions and results
6. Use evaluative and reflective skills in order to take responsibility for own learning, development and decision making
7. Take responsibility for the research, planning, time management and actions to access progression opportunities.
8. Effectively present themselves and their work to appropriate audiences through internal and external exhibitions of work and presentations

5 GCSEs at Grade 4 or above including Art & Design

Course Content

Year 1 -Diploma

These qualifications provide an opportunity for those students who have ambitions and aspirations of a career in the creative industries and arts to explore, develop and test their creativity within a qualification structure that is stimulating and demanding. Students will have the opportunity to develop transferable skills, making them versatile and employable individuals whilst learning the importance and application of ethical and sustainable design principles; as well as developing a rich contextual knowledge and understanding of their developing creative practice and specialist vocational area.

The UAL Level 3 Diploma in Creative Practice: Art, Design and Communication contains the following three mandatory units:

• The Creative Process
• Developing Creative Practice
• Responding to a set Brief

During the first year, students are introduced to a wide range of practical approaches and specialist disciplines. They are encouraged to experiment with and explore materials and techniques, to be creative in their approach and to develop ideas generation and confident visual communication skills.

Throughout the first year, coursework is formatively assessed by the course team. The final project (unit 3) is externally moderated and graded Pass, Merit or Distinction.
Work experience and live briefs are an integral part of the course. All students take part in the department end of year exhibition, which is open to the public.

Year 2 Extended Diploma

The UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative Practice: Art, Design and Communication contains the following three mandatory units in the second year:

• Researching a Specialist Industry Practice
• Specialist Technical Skills Development
• Specialist Creative Outcome

During the second year, greater emphasis is placed upon students developing skills within their chosen specialist pathway which may be Art (painting, sculpture, printmaking etc.) Communication (graphics, photography, illustration etc.), or Design (ceramics, textiles etc.)

Students also look towards life after college and prepare themselves for university entry, further training and employment. Visiting lecturers and speakers enrich the students’ experience and help them to make informed choices about their next step.

Work experience and live briefs are an integral part of the course and second year students have the opportunity to work with companies and the community as a whole.

Coursework is internally assessed, and the Final Major Project is externally moderated and graded Pass, Merit or Distinction.

All students take part in the department end of year exhibition, which is open to the public.

Pass, Merit or Distinction based on exhibition of final major project in chosen specialist area.

Progression

On successful achievement of this course you may wish to:

- Apply to study at Higher Education to undertake the Foundation Studies, the HND or BA Hons degree
- To pursue career opportunities within the creative industries

In Year 1 you will complete a Final Project for exhibition and go on educational visits to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and galleries in Manchester and Liverpool. In Year 2 you will produce a final major project, and exhibit at the department’s End of Year Show.
