Pearson BTEC Higher National qualifications are designed to develop practical skills alongside specialist knowledge and understanding of the subject area. These qualifications have been well respected and recognised by employers and Higher Education Institutions. The Higher National Diploma (HND) is a Level 5 qualification which is equivalent to the second year of the Bachelor Degree. HND qualifications can be studied by those in employment for professional development to enhance their career prospects or HNC students can use this as an alternative path to gain Higher Education locally at lower cost.

Pearson BTEC Higher Nationals in Applied Biology have been developed to focus on: equipping individuals with the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to succeed in employment in biologically-based industries enabling progression to an undergraduate degree or further professional qualification in applied biology or related areas providing specialist studies relevant to individual vocations and professions in which learners are working in, or intend to seek employment in, the biological sciences and their related industries developing learner ability in the biological sciences environment through effective use and combination of knowledge and skills gained in different parts of the programme.

This course looks to develop the specialist skills required to work within a laboratory environment in the specific field of chemistry. Chemistry is a ‘hands on’ subject, which requires attention to detail in order to complete complex analytical techniques. Within the course you will learn the complexities and organisational skills required to work within a lab. You will complete a variety of analytical sampling techniques and produce a range of scientific reports. You will gain a broad depth of subject knowledge and practical skills which will allow you to gain employment within the science or specifically Chemistry sector.

This course looks at developing laboratory, investigation and Science based skills. It is made up of units in Biology, Chemistry, Criminology, Forensic Science & Psychology. This course is for you if you have an interest in Science or wish to enter into either a Science, Forensic, Police or Criminology based career route.

Access to Higher Education Diplomas are full Level 3 qualifications designed to prepare adult learners without traditional qualifications for entry into Higher Education (whether this be a degree at University or an HNC, HND or Foundation Degree at the College).
Access to Higher Education Diplomas are designed to ease adult learners back into education and will develop your knowledge, build your confidence, improve your learning techniques and develop your communication and IT skills. They will also give you the essential tools to be able to study effectively. The courses are designed to enable learners who may be lacking in confidence, without formal educational backgrounds or who have other commitments, to succeed in Higher Education (HE).
Each year over 40,000 learners in the UK register on Access to HE Diplomas and most go on to succeed in HE and embark on life changing new careers.
Access to Higher Education Diploma (Science)
The Access to Higher Education Diploma (Science) gives you the opportunity to apply for a degree in science or a science-related subject – preparing you well for academic work and university life. It’s an extremely popular course and an excellent way to maximise your job prospects. It could lead to you having an exciting and worthwhile career………graduates in science subjects are in great demand!
Studying an Access to HE Diploma leads to a national qualification, which is accepted as a standard entry qualification by HE providers in England and Wales. The vast majority of universities will accept Access to Higher Education Diplomas (Science) as an entry requirement to a science-related degree, but you‘re advised to check this with each of the establishments you’re interested in attending.
The course starts in September for the duration of one academic year and is organised to allow students to fit their study around their home, family and work commitments (9.30am – 3.00pm). You will be expected to attend all teaching sessions for approximately 10 – 12 hours in college over 3 days a week. Please note that you will need to supplement this by studying in your own time. Sessions will be delivered in well-equipped traditional classroom/laboratory settings; in addition you will access on-line material.

• Loan eligibility doesn’t depend on your income and there are no credit checks
• If you complete your Access to HE course and subsequent degree, your Advanced Learner Loan will be written off

The HND in Applied Chemistry builds on the skills learnt from the HNC year and allows students to put into practice their knowledge of chemical processes and reactions. They will complete both practical based units and apply this to working within the chemical industry along with the completion of a work based project
